A few days ago, Mick Schumacher caused a stir with his surprisingly positive comments about a possible return to Formula One. His words suggested that an F1 seat was within reach. However, Germany’s RTL reporter and F1 expert Felix Görner takes a much more critical view of Schumacher’s situation.
Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, has struggled to establish himself in the sport despite his famous pedigree.
After scoring his first points for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, Mick Schumacher is optimistic about his chances of making a Formula One comeback. “My chances in Formula 1 seem to be pretty good so far,” he told the French news agency AFP, adding, “At the moment, Formula 1 is within reach.”
These comments reflect Schumacher’s strong desire to return to the top tier of motorsport. However, veteran F1 expert Felix Görner remains sceptical about the young driver’s prospects.
“There is nothing new about Schumacher,” Görner told sport.de. “The hopes he has expressed so far have no basis,” he continued. “It will be some time before he is ready to sign a contract,” said the long-time RTL reporter.
Mick Schumacher’s journey in Formula 1 began with the US-based Haas team, where he raced from 2020 to 2022. Despite his best efforts, he was unable to secure a new contract after his stint with Haas.
“At the moment, there is no realistic option for him to be number one somewhere if a cockpit becomes available,” explained Görner. The situation leaves the 25-year-old driver and his fans clinging to hope rather than a concrete opportunity.
Schumacher’s Alpine journey post F1

After losing his Haas seat at the end of 2022, Schumacher joined Mercedes as a reserve in 2023, a role he still holds today. He juggles these commitments with a full-time drive in Alpine’s WEC campaign, but his ultimate goal remains a return to F1.
“It’s a good championship, definitely a good plan B,” Schumacher told RacingNews365 of the WEC programme.
“It’s a good alternative if you have no options in F1. It has never been a secret that my goal is to get back into F1. That is what I am working on and working towards.”
“But it’s good to keep your finger on the pulse and stay race fit and that’s what I’m doing here,” he added.
“In terms of results, unfortunately, there is still little to write home about. We have always shown good speed, but we have never been able to convert it into a good result. Sometimes we were unlucky, like in Qatar with the red flag or at Spa and Imola with contact,
“At Le Mans, unfortunately, we had a double DNF [due to engine problems]. It was a difficult start to the season.”
Schumacher: “Formula 1 is within reach”
The young German has also raised eyebrows with unusually open words about a possible return to F1, suggesting that talks are underway with a real possibility of a F1 comeback.
“My chances in F1 seem to be pretty good at the moment,” Schumacher told French news agency AFP, adding unequivocally: “It’s important for me to return to F1 to show what I can do.”
“At the moment, F1 is within reach,” he explained, but added: “I have to make sure that I don’t get too confident, that I keep going and that I have a plan B in case it doesn’t work out.”
Despite his optimism, Schumacher is exercising patience. “My plan has always been Formula One, now we have to wait and see what opportunities present themselves to me,” he said. “I have decided to wait as long as necessary for Formula 1.”
Fighting for a place on the F1 grid
Despite the German’s optimism, Mick Schumacher will have to fight hard to regain his place on the F1 grid. As he continues to test tyres for Pirelli, former Ferrari and FIA boss Jean Todt has voiced his strong support for the young driver. Todt, a close family friend and former team boss of Schumacher’s father, believes that Mick Schumacher is “better than half the current F1 drivers”.
Despite his current role as a reserve driver for Mercedes and the difficulties he has faced in securing a permanent seat, Todt remains convinced of Schumacher’s talent and potential.
“He is a very talented driver who undoubtedly has what it takes for the series. Otherwise he would not have won Formula 3 and Formula 2,” said Todt in an interview with German newspaper Bild last month.
“Is he one of the top three or four drivers? I don’t know. But Mick is better than half the F1 drivers.”
